FAQ

I have an incarcerated loved one. How do I sign them up?
Click here to submit their name. Contact puuhonuapenpal@gmail.com with any questions.
-
How do I respond if my penpal requests money?
Boundaries are an important part of the penpal relationship. Utilize boundaries with your penpal, and do not compromise them. Having boundaries around providing money and anything else your penpal may request shows your penpal where you stand and reinforces radical and transformative communication.
-
What if my penpal is returning to our community soon?
Eventually, almost every incarcerated person is released and returns to our community. At that time, your relationship as a penpal with Puʻuhonua Penpals and that particular incarcerated person will end. From there, you can continue the relationship, if you choose. If you and your penpal decide you want to continue your relationship, please notify puuhonuapenpal@gmail.com so we can assist in facilitating meaningful reentry for your penpal through mutual aid.

What if my question isn’t answered here?
Sometimes you'll have questions or want help navigating hard conversations about abolition, safety, conflict management, etc, that's when we lean on each other. We're in this together.
Please email puuhonuapenpal@gmail.com for any questions you have that are not addressed above. We believe in the radical power of penpalling with our incarcerated community members, and encourage any questions you may have to help ease the process for both you and your penpal(s).
